Texas U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who led a Republican Senate delegation on a tour of the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas, said the senator encountered human traffickers and cartel members at the border who were shouting and laughing at law enforcement officials.
Cruz said in a video, “We saw cartel members, human traffickers, across the river and heard (their remarks), (they) were waving flashlights and yelling and laughing at Americans, laughing at the Border Patrol, because they know they can do whatever they want here under the current policies of the Biden administration.”
He said, “They get paid $4,000 to $5,000 for each person they smuggle into this country (the United States), and when they smuggle them (the smuggled people) into this country (the United States), the Biden Administration releases them (the smugglers).”
Since taking office, the Biden administration has taken some notable actions to undo the Trump (Trump) era crackdown on illegal immigration, including revoking the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), which keeps illegal immigrants in Mexico, and limiting the priority of deporting illegal immigrants while halting construction of the border wall. Biden also pledged to legalize 11 million illegal immigrants.
In addition, the Biden administration has reinstated catch-and-release, the practice of releasing captured illegal immigrants into the United States, which has resulted in the release of some illegal immigrants who have been tested for the Chinese Communist virus (coronavirus).
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) caught more than 100,000 (illegal) immigrants in February, and that number is expected to rise in March. With more than 5,000 people currently in CBP custody and more than 11,000 in the custody of the Department of health and Human Services (HHS), the administration is seeking to open more facilities to accommodate them.
Republicans are also questioning the Biden administration’s decision not to allow media access to facilities housing illegal aliens, a move that has prompted many members of Congress to visit the border themselves.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged earlier this month that the numbers are “overwhelming” and predicted that the U.S. will encounter more immigrants than it has in the past 20 years.
Speaking at his first news conference since taking office Thursday, President Biden said of the numbers of illegal aliens at the border, “It’s going to happen every other year.” “During the winter months of January, February and March, the number of people arriving at the border increases significantly.”
Biden also stressed Wednesday that the surge in illegal immigration began with the Trump Administration. “This new surge that we’re dealing with right now started with the last administration, but it’s our responsibility (to deal with the immigration surge).” Biden said.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Tuesday that the responsibility for the surge in illegal immigration at the border lies with Biden. He said Biden created certain “expectations” for those people that ultimately fueled the influx of illegal immigrants.
“People have created expectations that President Biden’s administration will treat (illegal) immigrants better. That made immigrants from Central America, and also from our country, want to cross the border, thinking it would be easier to do so,” the Mexican president said. The Mexican president said.
