The Arctic military wrestling is heating up, the United States and Canada last Saturday (20) to Friday (26) in the region held a large-scale air defense exercises, the use of supersonic bombers, stealth fighters and other military aircraft, to show Russia’s strength.
The exercise “Silver Mercury Dart” (AMALGAM DART) was held in Greenland and other northern areas, with the participation of U.S. F15 and F16 warplanes, F22 stealth fighters, B1B supersonic bombers, as well as KC10, KC46 and KC135 air refueling aircraft, C130 and C17 transport aircraft.
The CF18, CP140 patrol aircraft, CC130 search and rescue tactical aircraft, and CC150T air refueling aircraft represented Canada in the exercise, while NATO sent E3 airborne early warning aircraft.
The North American Air Defense Command, composed of the United States and Canada, said the U.S. and Canadian forces are operating jointly with allies and partners in the Arctic, and the exercise provides an opportunity to train in homeland defense techniques. Photos released Thursday (25) show F16s simulating the interception of two B1Bs on Tuesday (23), an apparent response to the increased activity of Russian aircraft in the region in recent years. The command emphasized the regularity of the exercise, which simulates hijackings, violations of airspace restrictions and responses to unidentified aircraft.
