A U.S. weather satellite that has been out of service for 8 years disintegrated in Earth orbit on the 10th of this month, breaking up into at least 43 pieces of space junk; not coincidentally, a Chinese weather satellite also disintegrated on the 18th, causing concern and speculation in the aerospace community.
U.S. technology news network Space.com quoted the U.S. Air Force 18th Space Control Squadron’s tweet pointed out that the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) launched in 2002 NOAA-17 weather satellite, 2013 because the instrument began to fail and removed from service, but NOAA-17 but on March 10 cracked.
At the Time, NOAA officials issued a statement saying, “The wreckage currently poses little risk to the International Space Station (ISS) or all critical space equipment.” But NOAA did not provide details on the cause of the incident, and a tweet from the 18th Space Control Squadron of the TAC mentioned that there was no indication that the satellite disintegrated as a result of the collision, while they tracked a total of 43 pieces of debris from the satellite.
Coincidentally, the 18th Space Control Squadron announced on the 18th that another weather satellite was found to have broken up, this time China’s “Cloud Sea 1 02” launched in September 2019, which the 18th Squadron tracked and found to have broken up into 21 pieces.
Another foreign media pointed out that the consideration of cloud sea 1 02 star only launched into orbit 1.5 years, and two satellites are torn into pieces, the incident makes people feel strange. Some experts believe that it is due to the explosion of the battery in the satellite, but it is difficult to confirm why the battery will explode; some researchers do not rule out that it is a “star war”, calling on all parties with artificial satellites to strengthen control of satellite movements.
Other researchers believe that the whole incident is attributed to changes in the Earth, fearing that the Earth’s poles may be about to produce changes related to. Earlier a group of European Space Agency (ESA) scientists found the so-called “South Atlantic Anomaly” (South Atlantic Anomaly), which is a piece of the Earth’s weakest geomagnetic region, fearing that the artificial satellites crossing this area over the impact of particles and anomalies or failures.
Scientists also do not rule out a possibility that the satellite was destroyed by meteorites and other space stars, this possibility has become less rare.
