Oakland, California Mayor Libby Schaaf announced Tuesday a privately funded income program that would give $500 a month to low-income families of color, with no rules on how the money would be spent and white families would not be eligible for the grant, The Gateway Pundit reported Thursday.
The program, which excludes poor white families, has come under fire for the Oakland mayor’s race-based plan.
Mayor Schiff said, “We designed this demonstration program to add to the evidence and begin the relentless push to provide income security federally.”
The Oakland program, to date, has raised $6.75 million from private donors, including the national philanthropic group Blue Meridian Partners. To be eligible to receive the grant, a Family must have at least one child under the age of 18 and an income at or below 50 percent of the area’s median income, which for a family of three translates to $59,000 a year.
