The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China held a tea party to announce the “Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of the Maritime Patrol Working Group” on the 26th, which was witnessed by Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-Sup, AIT Director Li Ying-Chieh (Brent Christensen), Ocean Affairs Commission Chairman Li Chung-Wei, and Maritime Patrol Administrator Zhou Mei-Wu. The Coast Guard also presented a model of the “Chiayi Ship” to AIT.
Through the MOU, the Coast Guard and the USCG will strengthen their efforts to protect marine resources, combat “illegal, unreported and unregulated” (IUU) fishing activities, and cooperate on joint maritime search and rescue (SAR) to ensure the prosperity and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
Wu Zhaosi said in his speech that this is the first memorandum signed by Biden backstage U.S., showing the institutionalization of Taiwan-U.S. exchanges and determination to move toward a full range of partners to jointly ensure the security of the Indo-Pacific maritime areas and the sustainable development of marine resources, the new U.S. government’s relationship with Taiwan “rock-solid” multi-level multi-faceted dialogue and cooperation between the two sides, Taiwan and the United States in the security and The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to work closely with the Biden Administration and looks forward to working with more countries on maritime dialogue, further strengthening global partnerships and defending human rights, democracy and rules of the international order.
Zhou Meiwu mentioned that previously, the Coast Guard will send trainees to the U.S. every year for training, while inviting the U.S. Coast Guard experience exchange, the future under the MOU structure, the Coast Guard will fully cooperate with the U.S. side, and further work together with the region’s common values partners to maintain an open, free and peaceful sea, the Republic of China’s international responsibility.
Li Yingjie said in Chinese that this memorandum allows the U.S. and Taiwan Coast Guard to further “formalize” the existing long-term close cooperation relationship, and after seeing the Coast Guard on duty, he truly believes they are the ideal partner for the U.S. to work together to promote regional maritime security, and to work more closely with both sides in the face of global challenges.
