On March 11, 2021, Border Patrol agents in Penitas, Texas, arrested approximately two dozen illegal immigrants.
According to the U.S. Department of health and Human Services (HHS), 16,513 unaccompanied illegal alien minors were detained at the southern border as of March 23. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will lead a group of 17 members of Congress on a personal visit to the border on Friday to “help Americans understand the tragedy that is unfolding. Democrats will also be traveling in a group.
According to statistics, there are currently 4,962 minors in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody and another 11,551 in HHS custody. Detention facilities for minors currently held at the border are overcrowded, with some minors huddled in thermal blankets for warmth, according to recently leaked photos.
Under pressure from the escalating crisis at the southern border and calls for transparency from the Biden administration, President Biden’s administration has pledged to release the number of unaccompanied minors to the outside world on a daily basis and has sent Vice President Hejinry to address the border crisis.
Under the Trump administration, the U.S. Immigration Service deported unaccompanied minors to their Home countries. The Biden Administration‘s decision to release minors into the United States has attracted desperate illegal children at the southern border.
According to the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), in 80 percent of the cases, children in HHS custody were coming to join Family members in the United States. In 40 percent of those cases, those family members were Parents or legal guardians.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said he will join a delegation of 17 Republican senators who are visiting a temporary placement facility in Donna, Texas, as part of their initiative to visit the southern border. Also on Friday, a group of Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Calif.), will visit immigration processing facilities at the southern border.
Cruz told reporters at a news conference Wednesday that “there will be 18 senators who will travel to the southern border, to Texas, to see firsthand the crisis that’s taking place and to see firsthand the more than 100,000 illegal immigrants who have been detained in the last month, and the more than 15,000 children who are in the custody of the Biden administration.”
He went on to say that it is regrettable that the Biden administration is still deciding to restrict media access to the border to cover the situation, saying it is a cover-up by the Biden administration and that “he (Biden) is doing this because he is afraid to let the outside world see the inhumane conditions and see those human tragedies.”
Cruz said last week that “the border crisis is a direct result of the Biden administration’s failed immigration policies.” He also said that the Biden administration’s return to a “catch and release” policy, its policy of stopping the construction of the border wall and stopping the policy of keeping illegal immigrants in Mexico, all contributed to the current situation.
The White House said they will continue to work to improve the transparency of the border situation, but have not yet finalized when more media will be allowed in.
