U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement Tuesday (March 23) on the joint U.S., Canadian, British and European Union sanctions against the Chinese Communist government for persecuting Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang. The U.S. Congress and the Administration’s China Committee defined such acts as Crimes Against Humanity.
The following is a translation of U.S. House Speaker Pelosi’s statement.
The sanctions against the Chinese Communist Party coordinated by the Biden administration are a firm and clear step forward in holding the Chinese Communist Party (government) accountable for the brutal atrocities committed against the Uighurs. These sanctions are a very clear indication that the United States and the international community are united in protecting the rights and dignity of the Uighurs from the Chinese Communist Party (government).
The CCP’s persecution of Uyghurs includes the detention of more than one million people in labor camps and the torture or extrajudicial execution of many more Uyghurs. These atrocities are a challenge to the human conscience and require action. These sanctions are based on bipartisan legislation in the U.S. Congress to hold Beijing accountable, including the Forced Uighur Labor Prevention Act, introduced by Rep. Jim McGovern (R-OH), the Uighur Human Rights Protection Act, introduced by Rep. Ted Deutch (R-UT), and the Uighur Human Rights Protection Act, introduced by Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-CA). Jennifer Wexton (D-CA), and the Forced Uyghur Labor Disclosure Act, introduced by Rep.
The United States, and our allies, will continue to hold Beijing accountable for its human rights abuses, including the persecution of the Tibetan people, the people of Hong Kong, and journalists, human rights lawyers, and activists in mainland China. If the United States does not speak out for human rights in China for commercial interests, we will lose all moral authority to speak out for human rights anywhere in the world.
