Former U.S. President Donald Trump (Trump) is backing incumbent Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) to challenge Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R-Ga.) in the 2022 party primary.
Trump issued a statement Monday (March 22) saying, “Unlike the current Georgia Secretary of State, Hice stands for integrity” and “Hice will stop fraud and inject integrity into our elections!”
Heath is one of the most prominent conservative Republican lawmakers, representing Georgia’s 10th District since 2015. Heath now serves on the House Oversight and Reform Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee, and is the ranking member of the Oversight and Reform Committee’s Subcommittee on Government Operations, as well as the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.
Heath, who has announced a challenge to the state’s Raffensperger in the 2022 Republican primary, has criticized Raffensperger’s mishandling of the 2020 presidential election and vowed to advocate for voting legislation and comprehensive voting reform in the Joe State if elected.
“Free and fair elections are the foundation of our country,” Heath said in a statement announcing his candidacy for secretary of state Monday, “What Raffensperger has done is create cracks in our electoral integrity, and I am 100 percent convinced that someone has exploited those cracks in 2020. While I am glad to see the State Legislature taking the initiative to address some of the outstanding issues in our elections, Joe State deserves a Secretary of State, taking responsibility for the office.”
“If elected, I will uphold Joe’s state laws, implement meaningful reforms and aggressively pursue individuals who commit voter fraud to rebuild our confidence in the election process,” said Heath, “Every Georgian, indeed every American, is outraged by the actions of Joe’s Secretary of State and his inaction of his actions. Our state deserves a leader who is far removed from scandal and focused on the important duties of the office.”
“If elected, my top priority will be to make sure that the legitimate votes cast by every Joe State resident will be counted in future elections. I am energized by the campaign because I know that together we can restore integrity.” Heath wrote.
Heath has insisted in the past that Joe State committed serious fraud in the 2020 election, while publicly expressing his displeasure with the inaction of current Secretary of State Raffensperger, who he believes “largely ignored the legitimate concerns of millions of Americans about the Trump-Biden election.”
In his final days in office, former President Trump also said he would run against Raffensperger, the current Joe Secretary of State, in his next campaign. Last week it was even rumored that Trump would announce on Monday that he would strongly support the powerhouse candidate challenging Joe Secretary of State.
After Heath formally announced his challenge to Raffensperger on Monday, Trump declared his support for Heath’s decision just minutes later.
“One of our most distinguished members of Congress, Heath, has announced that he is running for the great Joe State Secretary of State (position).” In a statement, Trump said, “Heath has been a staunch fighter for Joe State’s conservative values and a staunch ally of the America First agenda.”
“Unlike the current Joe Secretary of State, Heath has always marched with integrity. I have 100 percent confidence that Heath will fight for free, fair and safe elections for Joe State in line with our beloved U.S. Constitution.” Trump wrote, “Heath will stop fraud and ensure the integrity of our elections! Heath loves Joe Staters and has my complete and 100 percent support.”
