Finnish security service: Chinese communist group linked to hacking of Finnish parliament

The Finnish security services confirmed on the same day that an investigation into last year’s cyberattack on the Finnish Parliament found that the hacker group in question was linked to the Chinese government, AFP reported on March 19.

The Finnish parliament disclosed in December last year that it had been subjected to a serious cyber espionage attack “against the Finnish democracy and society” in the autumn of that year.

The Finnish cybersecurity service SUPO reportedly followed up and found that the hacking group was APT31, which has been identified by the US cybersecurity firm FireEye and is believed to be working for the Chinese government.

A spokesman for Finland’s cybersecurity department told AFP that while the identity of the hacker group can be confirmed, the Cyber Attack techniques used by the Hackers and what information was leaked are still to be investigated.

According to the “FireEye” investigation, APT31 mainly focuses on collecting political, economic and military information in favor of the Chinese government and state-owned enterprises.
