North Korea suddenly announced on Friday that it has severed diplomatic relations with Malaysia. In response, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry condemned North Korea’s decision, describing the move as highly unfriendly and unhelpful.
According to foreign media reports, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that it decided to close the Malaysian Embassy in Pyongyang and ordered all diplomatic staff and their families of the North Korean Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to leave the country within 48 hours. The statement expressed deep regret over North Korea’s decision, while condemning it as “a very unfriendly and unhelpful move that does not respect the spirit of mutual respect and good neighborly relations among members of the international community.”
Malaysia’s foreign ministry said it has worked tirelessly to strengthen relations between the two countries in the past, citing the tragic assassination of North Korean citizen Kim Jong-nam in 2017 and also provided relevant assistance, criticizing North Korea’s move to cut diplomatic ties as undermining regional peace, stability and prosperity.
The Malaysian Foreign Ministry said that “as a country that upholds the principles of justice, rule of law and judicial independence”, it stressed that the extradition of North Korean citizen Mun Chol Myong is justified by law; and pointed out that the Malaysian government has given Mun Chol Myong his due rights to safeguard human rights during his detention.
