Tanzanian President Magufuli attends a ceremony for the death of former President Mkaba on July 29, 2020.
President Magufuli of the East African nation of Tanzania (Tanzania), who has not been seen publicly since February 27, prompting speculation as to whether he was infected with the Communist Chinese Virus Disease (COVID-19), has died at the age of 61, the country’s Vice President Hassan announced on state television on February 17.
Samia Suluhu Hassan said on state TV TBC: “The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Honorable Dr. John Magufuli… has died of heart problems in Dar es Salaam, where he was treated. Mzena Hospital, where he was treated.”
However, Hassan did not say why the president had not been seen before.
Magufuli has not been seen publicly since Feb. 27, and his Twitter feed has not been updated since Feb. 23. Government officials had previously said Magufuli was working as usual and that citizens should ignore rumors coming from overseas.
Officials had denied on March 12 that he was ill. Police have also arrested four people since last week on charges of spreading false news that the political leader was ill.
However, Tanzanians have told Reuters on condition of anonymity that there is a climate of fear and anxiety in the country because the president’s condition is unknown.
Magufuli won the election only last October and took office despite questions from opposition parties about election fraud.
Magufuli is skeptical of the Chinese Communist virus and has stopped reporting the number of people infected since May last year, and has denounced the vaccine as a Western conspiracy.
However, he began to realize the serious risks of the Epidemic only after Seif Sharif Hamad, the first vice president of Tanzania’s autonomous region of Shangipa, died in February from the CCP virus outbreak, but it appears to be too late.
So far, Tanzania has announced 509 confirmed diagnoses, of which 29 have died from the epidemic. Only last July, former President Benjamin Mkapa passed away, and this year another president was lost.
