17-year-old Burmese Chinese medical student shot dead, mother grieves, denounces Chinese Communist Party

The people of Myanmar have been protesting against the junta’s armed coup for more than a month and a half now. According to some figures, 148 people have been massacred so far. In the process of confronting the military and police with their bare hands and demanding democracy and human rights, Burmese people’s anger against the Chinese Communist government and Chinese-owned enterprises is also heating up.

The 17-year-old Chinese Burmese student Lin Yaozong, a medical student with a promising future, was tragically shot and killed by police during a protest in Yangon on March 14. A video obtained by Free Asia from a Burmese citizen journalist shows police then approaching his body and his female companion, who was hiding under a shield beside him, being severely beaten.

On March 3, Deng Jia Xi, a 19-year-old girl, was shot in the neck at the protest and died instantly. Her last words, “Please let me donate my body to save more people,” brought tears to the eyes of many.

Lin’s Parents were devastated by the death of their son. At the rally, Lin’s father appealed to the Chinese Communist Party authorities to help these Burmese citizens, the Burmese diaspora, who are seeking democracy, for the sake of us Chinese! “I hope you will think a little bit more about us overseas Chinese and show your sympathy for our cause of democracy.”

Mama Lin almost broke down emotionally. She cried, “I have lost a son today. My son was smart and well-behaved…I am a true Chinese…You have to think about us, the people. What we need is democracy, what we need is justice, what we need is freedom. Please help us a little bit. Please help us old people…I am a real Chinese. But I don’t love your Chinese government, not at all!”

The Burmese netizen who posted the video of Lin’s mother’s sobbing to social media platforms wrote in English: “In memory of Lin Yaozong, shame on China, you have the blood of Chinese people on your hands. You are helping the military government that is killing defenseless people.”

”Shwe Yee Win, executive director of Peace & Justice Myanmar, told Radio Free Asia on March 16 that many Burmese believe that the Chinese Communist government secretly supported, and even participated in, the military coup. “Many Burmese are upset with China because they believe that the Chinese side supported the military coup. As China exerts its influence, previous statements issued by ASEAN have also failed to express a clear attitude toward the coup.”

In a tweet mourning Lin Yaozong, someone wrote, “We love all Burmese born Chinese, several of my closest friends are of Chinese descent. We just hate the Chinese government and its interference in our country.”

Twitter users have started the hashtag #ChineseEmbassyGetOutOfBurma since March 15, ranting, “At least 70 heroes died in yesterday’s brutal military crackdown. But the Chinese Embassy in Burma issued a statement on protecting its investments, ignoring the deaths of Burmese. We don’t want such neighbors.”

The latest news says that the Chinese Communist Embassy in Burma has ordered the country's Chinese citizens to evacuate by March 24.

The English-language South China Morning Post also cited a notice seen by the paper saying that the Communist Party’s State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council has asked Chinese state-owned enterprises to evacuate non-essential employees from Myanmar.
