Li Hongzhang was born in 1823, when he was young, he studied under Zeng Guofan, and was credited with suppressing the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, then he worked with Zeng Guofan and others to carry out the foreign affairs movement, and also established the Beiyang Marine Division, but when people mention him, they will recall the 30 treaties he signed, including the Treaty of Xinchao, the Treaty of Shimonoseki, and so on. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, with the acquiescence of Cixi, the Boxer Rebellion entered Beijing under the slogan of “Support the Qing Dynasty and Destroy the Foreigners” and besieged the consulates of various countries, which hated the foreigners and declared war on the powers. But Beijing was unable to resist, so Cixi took the Guangxu Emperor to flee to the west, and ordered Li Hongzhang, the governor of Guangdong and China, to represent the Qing government and go to Beijing to negotiate with the powers. However, Li Hongzhang insisted on rushing to Beijing despite his family’s opposition and advice.
The journey was tiring, coupled with the psychological burden of mediation with the foreigners, Li Hongzhang fell ill, he dragged his sick body, strong spirit, and the powers argued. Even though he vomited blood several times during the negotiations, he insisted on minimizing the losses of the Qing government. Finally, the foreigners reduced the 1 billion taels of silver to 450 million taels. Li Hongzhang had no choice but to sign the humiliating Treaty of Xinchao after Cixi agreed to do so.
In 1901, Li signed the historically famous Treaty of Xin Chou, Li Hongzhang vomited a lot of blood due to a ruptured blood vessel in his stomach, and finally he forced himself to sign the contract before he died and returned Home without getting up again, lying in bed waiting to die.
