Germany joins European countries in discontinuing AZ vaccine

Germany decided today to stop administering the AZ vaccine because of a number of cases of blood clots in vaccine recipients in Europe produced by the British company AstraZeneca, saying the matter must be studied more closely.

The German Ministry of health said the Paul Ehrlich Institute, which is in charge of vaccines, felt it was necessary to investigate the matter further after new reports of vaccination-related cerebral vein embolism in Germany and Europe.

The health ministry said, “The European Union Medicines Agency (EMA) will decide whether and how the new findings will affect the licensing of this vaccine.”
