Burma’s military and police cheered as they watched civilians being hunted

People are arrested as security forces stand guard on a road next to dismantled barricades set up by protesters against a military coup in Yangon, March 12, 2021.

Security forces killed at least 22 demonstrators against the military coup in the first major city of Yangon’s Lae Daya district, plus at least 39 in total in other areas, in the bloodiest day since Myanmar’s military coup, the Association for Assistance to Political Prisoners (AAPP) said on 14. At the same Time, Twitter also circulated images of military police shooting protesters at the scene, as if they were holding a rave party.

The tweeted video shows a group of police officers gathered in the street, a police officer with a gun crouched down to aim at the far side and shoot, the moment the target was hit, the military police on the side of the onlookers burst out cheering.

Netizens said the Myanmar military police acted as if they were “throwing a party”, taking civilian lives as if they were hunting animals.

The photographer of Reuters, soe zeya tun, who has won the Pulitzer Prize, also shared the video recently, pointing out that the Burmese military police had a party in the parliament building in Naypyitaw on the evening of the 9th, and only later deleted the live video.

The Myanmar Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (MAPP) said on February 14 that in addition to Hlaingthaya district, 16 protesters were killed elsewhere, and a police officer was also killed, which is the result of a coup by the military on February 1 to arrest the elected government. It was the bloodiest day since February 1, when the military launched a coup to arrest elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Burma’s anti-coup activists continue to take to the streets in defiance of the violent crackdown, with the death toll rising to 126 so far.

Burma’s state-run media pointed out that the military government declared martial law in Yangon’s Ledaia and Shwepyitha districts on the evening of the 14th.
