Former New York mayor and Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani
A New York university recently voted to keep the honorary doctorate awarded to Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney and former New York mayor, for his contributions to New York City.
St. John Fisher College awarded Giuliani the doctorate in 2015 for his role in the recovery of New York City after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Giuliani has been accused by the left of being involved in the protesters’ break-in at the Capitol for speaking at the “Stop Voter Theft” rally in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, and for assisting Trump with allegations of 2020 election fraud, so progressives are calling for the school to rescind the honorary degree. Giuliani’s honorary degree.
The St. John Fisher College Board of Trustees said in a statement Friday (March 13) that it was aware of the call and voted on the matter, ultimately declining to rescind Giuliani’s honorary degree.
The board said, “The college takes pride in respecting the views of everyone in the Fisher community and beyond. However, the matter of revoking the honorary degree and the authority to confer that honor is within the purview of the College’s Board of Trustees.”
“Following extensive deliberations by the Board of Trustees, the Board voted today on whether to revoke the honorary degree. The decision to confer an honorary degree or to revoke an honorary degree requires a two-thirds majority of the entire Board of Trustees, which was not achieved. No further action will be taken by the university.”
Middlebury College (Vermont) revoked the honorary degree awarded to Giuliani in January.
Middlebury College, a private liberal arts college, said in a statement at the Time, “Middlebury College has decided to revoke the honorary degree awarded to presidential attorney Rudolph Giuliani in 2005 and has communicated it to Mr. Giuliani’s office.”
The college did not state the reasons for the decision. But the editorial board of the college’s newspaper requested a few days ago that the honorary degree given to Giuliani be withdrawn, citing Giuliani’s representation in the Trump election lawsuit.
Giuliani led the legal team representing President Trump and his campaign in a series of lawsuits challenging the legality of the 2020 presidential elections in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Georgia, among other states. The former New York City mayor spoke before several state legislatures, urging them to exercise their constitutional authority to appoint presidential electors in order for Trump to declare the election a winner.
