CCTV has uncovered a scam by unscrupulous elements to lure cheap old people into the rat race through a “free egg collection” campaign. There is no such thing as a free lunch, and the trap of greed is not uncommon, but there are still people who fall for it one after another.
The Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing recently heard a case in which a company sent free eggs and gifts to attract the elderly to their homes, and then lobbied them to join a WeChat group to sell functional shoes and black grain powder that claimed to have magical healing properties. The company’s owner, Liang Wenqing, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison and fined 8,000 yuan (RMB, same below), while employee Li Zimei was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 3,000 yuan.
The report pointed out that the defendant Liang Wenqing, together with Li Zimei, attracted elderly people by giving them gifts at the Baolong Building in Fengtai District, Beijing, falsely believing that the products sold, such as terahertz quantum shoes and selenium-rich malt black grain powder, were for astronauts and could cure various diseases. Taking advantage of the elderly people’s health-seeking psychology, they have cheated seven people by overpricing and selling the products, with a total fraudulent amount of $49,564.
According to the report, the two defendants not only often lectured and shared the so-called efficacy of the “Terahertz Energy Shoes” to the members of the group, but the defendant Li Zimei also claimed that he had cured his bunion by wearing the shoes.
The company’s shoes are indeed a regular manufacturer, and the shoes are also registered trademarks, but the brand did not indicate the words “terahertz energy” when the shoes were shipped. The original price of 60 yuan a pair of ordinary shoes, was fabricated to have curative effect, and thus sold to thousands of dollars.
Another “selenium-rich malt black grain powder” product, also by the Liang Li two people said it was fantastic, falsely claimed to be aerospace exclusive products. According to the investigation, this product is also produced by the regular manufacturers, the main ingredients for grains and cereals, the cost of 20 yuan per box of ordinary Food, not what the astronauts special products, the company’s selling price is 25 yuan per box, but the two defendants to 398 yuan a box sold.
