According to the mainland media, in September 2020, Mr. Li, a citizen of Jiangdu, Yangzhou, saw an anchor selling a beef jerky on a short live video platform. The anchor claimed that the jerky was produced in Inner Mongolia and the beef used was grassland cattle, green and healthy with good taste.
Mr. Li then clicked on the purchase link and bought 4 bags of beef jerky at a price of 99 yuan.
After receiving the goods, Mr. Li tasted and found that the taste was different from the beef jerky he had previously eaten. He took a closer look at the package and found that the bag only said the word “jerky”. Subsequently, Mr. Li reported the case to the police.
The authoritative Food inspection agency found that the composition of beef was 0%, and the composition of duck meat was 100%.
Police inquiries found that the product is sold by an e-commerce company in Suzhou. The e-commerce company is operated by three bosses in partnership, the company also has more than 10 customer service staff.
The company since July last year, began to help a food company in Inner Mongolia to sell the product online, and another Chengdu media company cooperation, for its promotion and publicity.
The three owners of the e-commerce company confessed, “We know this ‘beef jerky’ is fake, not made of beef.”
They also explained that “the pre-packaging bags are written on the word ‘beef jerky’, but there are too many complaints, we docked with the food company and told the situation, they changed the packaging to the word ‘jerky’, trying to muddle through. “
In early November last year, the police arrested nearly 20 suspects from the three companies involved in the case.
From July to November last year, the three companies “cooperation” sales of fake jerky cumulative sales of more than 8 million yuan, at least one month sales also have more than 1 million yuan, at most, a single month sales of more than 2 million yuan.
The police announced the case to the public on March 10 this year.
