A statue of Trump for sale on Taobao.
A special statue recently launched on the national shopping site Taobao has taken the Chinese social media platform by storm. The statue is styled after former U.S. President Donald Trump (Trump) in a seated position.
The Guardian reported Wednesday (10) that the statue of Trump, with his hands in seal (a Buddhist posture representing meditation and contemplation) and his face downcast, was equipped with a tag on Taobao that read, “Trump who knows more about Buddhism than anyone else.
A 1.6-meter-tall Trump figurine currently costs 999 yuan on Taobao, and a larger 4.6-meter statue is priced at 3,999 yuan.
The seller, based in Xiamen, Fujian Province, has slightly modified Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” to make it sound very auspicious – “Make your company great again!” The slogan of the Trump statue should bring good luck to the company.
“Most people buy them just for fun,” the seller said, adding that a total of 100 statues were made and dozens have been sold so far.
In a description of the item, the seller wrote: “The Trump statue is not intended to stir up any political talk. In fact, this portfolio just reminds us that no matter what political affiliation we belong to, we can all use a little more laughter and joy in our lives!”
Although Trump ended his first presidential term on Jan. 20, he remains the inspiration for popular items on Taobao. According to The Guardian, Taobao continues to sell “Trump merchandise,” such as masks, figures, figurines, hats, socks and more.
