Reuters: U.S. tightens Huawei’s grip on 5G equipment and component exports to offer new restrictions

Reuters, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the Biden administration has tightened its grip on huawei, revising this week its licensing rules and conditions for Huawei’s sales of 5G components, a move that could undermine existing contracts between suppliers and Huawei and prevent them from shipping any more.

If true, the move shows the Biden Administration is tightening export controls on Huawei.

The U.S. Department of Commerce declined to comment, saying that license-related information is protected.

Huawei was added to the U.S. list of entities in 2019, and some previous export licenses were approved by the Commerce Department. Some suppliers may not be able to fulfill their current contracts with Huawei because of the latest revised measures, although they have already obtained licenses, people familiar with the matter said.

Bloomberg reported that the new specifications more clearly prohibit the export of semiconductors, antennas and batteries used in Huawei’s 5G equipment, allowing for more uniform specifications for licenses issued at different times. Some licenses previously allowed continued shipments to Huawei, while others were subject to stricter regulations.
