Taiwan responds to Li Keqiang’s “One-China” and “1992 Consensus” remarks: Taiwan people will not accept them

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang reiterated his policy on Taiwan regarding “one China” and the “1992 Consensus” at a press conference after the National People’s Congress on Thursday. Taiwan’s government responded quickly that day.

According to the Central News Agency, the Mainland Affairs Council of Taiwan’s Executive Yuan pointed out in writing that night that the Taiwanese people would not accept the political framework of Beijing‘s dwarfing of Taiwan and oppose its pressure and negative rhetoric to create cross-strait confrontation, “which will only offset the efforts of both sides to promote healthy interaction.

The Land Commission stressed that the Taiwan government’s policy position of firmly defending national sovereignty and democratic freedoms and striving to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is consistent; it called on the other side of the Taiwan Strait to uphold mutual respect, goodwill and understanding attitude, pragmatic dialogue to deal with differences and gradually promote healthy and orderly cross-strait exchanges.

It is reported that Li Keqiang held a premier’s press conference in Beijing on the same day after the conclusion of the National People’s Congress. Li Keqiang said in response to questions from the Taiwanese media that China adheres to the “one China” and “1992 Consensus” approach to Taiwan, and under this premise, welcomes interactions and dialogue with any political party or group in Taiwan.
