The Wall Street Journal reported on March 11 that zoologist Peter Daszak, a member of the World health Organization’s expert team that went to Wuhan to investigate the origin of the new crown virus, said at a seminar held by the Royal Institute of International Affairs, an international affairs think tank in London, that scientists After tracking down and pinpointing the animal source of the new crown virus, it is likely that the source of the New crown outbreak will be found in the next few years.
Three members of the team, including Dasak, were quoted as describing a recent month-long trip to Wuhan, China, by a team of WHO experts. Dasak said the international team members learned during the trip that some of the meat once sold in South China seafood markets came from animals known to carry the same Family of coronaviruses as the new coronavirus. The team’s main hypothesis is that a bat or other wildlife species carrying the founder virus, a closely related virus, infected a farm animal or a person, and then that farm animal or person brought the virus to the South China seafood market.
He said, “It is believed that this is the most likely scenario and most of the people on the investigation team share the same view.”
The WHO team of experts to Wuhan is expected to release a report on the investigation as soon as next week, which will include findings on the origin of Wuhan’s new coronavirus, which is of concern to all parties, as well as recommendations for further research. The U.S. government has said it is waiting to review the final report of the WHO panel of experts.
