Secretary of State John Blinken will meet with the top foreign affairs official of the People’s Republic of China during a March 18 stopover in Alaska, the State Department said Wednesday (March 10), marking the first high-level contact between the two countries since the Biden administration.
In Anchorage, Blinken and White House National Security Adviser Sullivan will meet with Chinese Communist Party Politburo member Yang Jiechi and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who are China’s top foreign affairs officials.
The meeting will follow Blinken’s visit to the allied countries of Japan and South Korea. This meeting will follow Secretary Blinken’s meetings in Tokyo and Seoul with our closest allies in the region,” a State Department statement said. Blinken’s trip to Japan and South Korea is his first since becoming chief diplomat of the United States.
A State Department statement said Blinken and Sullivan “will discuss a range of topics with the People’s Republic of China,” but did not provide further details.
U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had their first phone call as heads of state last month, and the two sides appeared to disagree on most issues.
