The rest of Nevada’s Democratic Party staff resigned after the far-left candidate won a seat in the Nevada Democratic Party leadership on Saturday (March 6).
Judith Whitmer won the Nevada Democratic Party chairmanship on Saturday, and then the party’s executive director, Alana Mounce, sent her an email informing her that party staffers were resigning in protest.
The Intercept reported Monday (March 8) that the resignations included the party’s director of operations, director of research, director of communications and director of finance.
Whitmer was part of the NV Dems Progressive Slate, a group that is closely aligned with the Democratic-run Progressive Unity Slate. The Progressive Unity Slate, run by the Democratic Party, is the antithesis of the Progressive Unity Slate.
Whitmer said in an interview, “We weren’t surprised, because we were prepared for this.” “But what is shocking to us is that those who claim to be committed to unity have in fact been deepening the divide. They just want to leave and don’t want to work with us.”
A former Democratic Party staffer told The Intercept that Whitmer would turn around all the progressive wing of the party. The staffer, who asked not to be named, said, “There are a lot of staffers who have put a lot of effort into making our party the best state party in America. But I know we can’t work with her and would hate to watch her undermine years of our hard work.”
The incident reflects long-standing tensions between two factions within the Democratic Party, such as establishment member Hillary Clinton, who is at odds with many progressive members such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). The latter has been identified as a socialist in the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) reportedly ran the “Democratic Progressives of Nevada” with the leftist caucus to gain leadership in the state. Even all of the candidates (except one) are dues-paying members of the local DSA.
