In the age of the Internet, the public is no stranger to the sharing economy. In Chengdu, Sichuan, a “cat-sharing” store has recently appeared, with each cat rented for only 9.9 yuan (RMB, same below, about HK$12) per day. The owner told the media that all the cats in the store have been rented out and people who want to rent them later need to wait in line. But netizens criticized the rental of cats ignoring the psychological health of cats, describing it as unethical trading.
The “cat sharing” store is located in a shopping center in Chengdu, and the sign outside the store reads “9.9 yuan to take your cat Home with you”. A reporter from the media visited the shop and found that it was a pet store selling various breeds of cats and dogs, with many cages containing several different breeds of cats and puppies in a few square meters of the store.
The store owner said that there were 10 cats used for sharing in the store, all of which were adult British short cats about one year old. He continued that a deposit is required to rent the shared cats, and the amount ranges from 1,200 yuan (about HK$1,440) to tens of thousands of yuan depending on the type. The tenant needs to provide a copy and original ID card, a photo of the home address environment, and sign a cat rental contract, and the tenant must live locally in Chengdu and have no other pets at home.
The tenant must also buy cat Food and supplies at the store, which costs about 300 yuan (about HK$360). The owner’s reasoning is that if the cat suddenly changes its food, it will have diarrhea, and it is easy to get irritated by changing food just after changing the environment. For the cat to frequently change the living environment and owner, will it have a negative impact on it. The store owner said that shared cats have been used to the situation, as long as it is good for the cat, in fact, the cat does not have the so-called whether the problem of habit.
In fact, in Shenzhen in 2017, there was a “shared cat” pet store. For this kind of behavior, many netizens have a negative attitude, “take the animal to make money will not really be good for it”, “how to make the unethical business so justified”, “cats are timid by nature, this is not good for cats “; some people point out that frequent changes in the environment make the cats’ exploration of the new environment is constantly disturbed and interrupted, making them frustrated and therefore prone to become more burned out and negative.
