U.S. White House responds to Wang Yi’s “abide by one China” call: U.S. position on Taiwan is clear and unchanged

White House spokeswoman Chuckie responded to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s call for the Biden administration to adhere to the “One China” principle at a regular press conference Monday. The U.S. position on Taiwan is clear and unchanged, and will work with allies and allied states to promote prosperity, security and values in the Indo-Pacific region, said Sharkey.

Wang Yi recently told a press conference at China’s 13th National People’s Congress that “the Chinese government has no room for compromise and no room for concessions on the Taiwan issue. He urged the United States to adhere to the “one-China principle” and the “three joint communiqués between China and the United States.

White House spokeswoman Sharkey reiterated Monday that the United States has long followed the commitments outlined in the three U.S.-China communiqués, the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances. The U.S. will also continue to assist Taiwan in maintaining adequate self-defense capabilities, and the U.S. position has not changed.

The Central News Agency quoted the Taiwan Legislative Yuan’s Mainland Affairs Committee as saying in response to Wang Yi’s appeal that Taiwan’s position of firmly defending national sovereignty and democratic freedom has always been consistent, and that the Republic of China is a sovereign state, “Taiwan has never been part of the People’s Republic of China, and only the 23 million people of Taiwan have the right to decide on Taiwan’s future.
