Former U.S. Defense Secretary Gates recently publicly warned that the situation in Taiwan is “very dangerous” in the multi-party competition between the U.S. and China, noting that Xi Jinping is actively working to bring Hong Kong and Taiwan under the control of the Chinese Communist Party during his tenure. He fears that the Communist Party will adopt a “nibbling strategy” toward Taiwan. On March 8, President Tsai Ing-wen went to Keelung to visit the “Army’s three branches of the eight plug fuel depot” and the “Navy’s 131 fleet” respectively, hoping that the Ministry of National Defense will continue to enhance the joint warfare energy of the three armies, expand the national defense of all people, and achieve the strategic goal of heavy layer of deterrence.

She first went to Keelung’s Bajong camp to visit the Army’s Bajong fuel depot, and listened to a briefing by the depot manager, Yan Zhigang, and went to the safety control center to learn about the facilities and operation mode, and then awarded additional dishes to encourage the brothers and sisters of the national army for their dedication. She then went to Keelung Weihai Camp to visit the 131st Navy Fleet. She was briefed by 131st Fleet Commander Zeng Anguo on the itinerary and then boarded the Lanyang warship to visit the officers’ mess, cabin control room and the female officers’ living quarters to understand the work and Life on the ship.

At noon on the 8th, Tsai dined with representatives from the 131st Fleet, Keelung Communications Team and the 4th Company of Marine Police, and awarded extra dishes of Gold to thank the national army for their hard work.

In her speech, she said that she wanted to thank the brothers and sisters of the national army on behalf of the nation for enduring the sea wind and cold for 24 hours to guard the sea border for us. “The 131st Fleet is responsible for monitoring the dynamics of the common ships in normal times, and is responsible for escorting the East China Sea and Matsu transportation and replenishment, and when an emergency disaster occurs, it will even immediately go out to assist in the rescue, which is a great responsibility.”

Tsai mentioned that she just saw everyone’s efforts to defend the sea border in the fleet commander’s briefing. The brave performance of the national army shows the determination to defend “the sovereignty of the country and not to give an inch”. “With all of you guarding the country, the people of China can rest assured.”

She said that last year, Taiwan’s national ship national construction also has a lot of results, now the successor of the Tuojiang ship has been integrated into the fleet on January 1 of this year, the implementation of the training of officers and men to take over the ship, is one of the results. It is believed that with the addition of these high-performance warships, the 131 fleet will definitely add wings to the tiger.

Tsai went on to say that the first phase of the Weihai Camp relocation project, which began construction, has been completed. The subsequent projects will also be accelerated, so that we can have newer and more modern equipment and barracks to use as soon as possible, so that the 131st Fleet’s combat capability can be enhanced.

The new Minister of National Defense, Qiu Guozheng, was also present. Tsai Ing-wen said that she would ask Minister Qiu to supervise the navy and ensure the progress of the barracks renovation. She also expects him to implement the existing planning projects, and in the future, to enhance the joint combat capabilities of the three armies, expand the national defense of all people, and achieve the strategic goal of heavy layer deterrence. She stressed that “strengthening the ability and confidence to defend the homeland depends on the joint efforts of all of us, especially under the supervision of Minister Qiu.”

On March 8, International Women’s Day, she also mentioned that the professional performance of many female officers and soldiers was recognized by all, proving that all can take on the responsibility of defending the country regardless of gender. Finally, she also once again thanked the 131st Fleet and all the officers and soldiers on site for their dedication and efforts in guarding the country.
