When Britons were trapped in their homes during the Communist virus Epidemic, playing the piano became the perfect stress relief. This unexpectedly led to a surge in piano sales and allowed a two hundred year old Yorkshire piano firm to keep the art of hand-crafting better.
Cavendish Pianos in Yorkshire, England, is the only piano maker in the UK that still uses traditional hand craftsmanship, with an enviable 200-year history. In its glory days in England, there were more than 350 piano factories.
Managing Director Adam Cox hopes that the valuable master craftsmanship will be passed on to future generations.
Adam Cox, Managing Director of Cavendish Pianos: “There are so many processes in piano making that you really can’t measure, you can only feel. This is the craft, or the art, of making pianos. 200 years of tradition and 200 years of knowledge. It would be a tragedy if it were lost.”
Cavendish Piano House is currently located in a converted barn in the Yorkshire Dales (UK). Each piano is handmade with 230 strings and takes about five months to complete, with a distinctly English flavour.
Once the strings are fitted, each key is struck more than 5,000 times by a “basher”.
Jamie Cullum is a world-famous jazz-pop singer and one of the most famous British pianists. He praised the craftsmen of the Cavendish piano firm as “artists”.
Jamie Cullum, jazz-pop singer and pianist: “You feel the Music in an instrument made of wood and metal, with a tinkling sound. It’s a motorized, wonderful, human instrument.”
