Iranian Militia Claims Active Organization in Washington DC

An Iranian militia in Iraq has claimed in social media posts that it has active cells in Washington, D.C., and other U.S. cities with the ability to carry out attacks inside the United States.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), which has long monitored the threat of terrorism, noted a post in English from the Kawtheryoon Electronic Team, a Telegram channel used by an Iranian militia and its supporters.

The post (link here) says the Iranian resistance is stronger than ever and is expanding to operate even on U.S. soil, including Washington, D.C.

The post says, “Today the axis of resistance is stronger than ever. Resistance cells are even rooted in the United States and its capital.” The article also warned that U.S. forces should be withdrawn not only from Iraq, but from the entire Middle East altogether.

The group also threatened Israel, calling it a “Zionist hater” and saying the resistance has “thousands of people” who could rise up to replace slain Lebanese Hezbollah leader Imad Mughniyeh.

The text says: “And you, Zionist haters, I will just summarize for you in words the horror of the South, which is stronger than ever, and we have thousands of people like Imad Mughniyeh.”

“Do not think that because you and the Americans killed Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis that you will survive the torment of the resistance,” the text states. “We lie in wait for you evil people, and what comes next will be worse.”

The post was accompanied by a poster showing the coffin of a U.S. soldier and a “resistance fighter” looking down on rockets being fired at the city.

Asked last week what message the U.S. airstrikes in Syria were sending to Iran, President Joe Biden warned that Iran could not act with impunity and warned Iran to “be careful.”

“You can’t act with impunity, you have to be careful.” Biden told reporters in Texas.

On Feb. 25, Biden authorized the U.S. military to conduct airstrikes against facilities of pro-Iranian militia groups in eastern Syria in response to rocket attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq.

Iran has said it was not behind several recent attacks, whether in Iraq, against shipping in the Gulf or against Saudi facilities by the Houthimovement.

On Wednesday, an Iraqi base where U.S. troops are stationed came under rocket fire again, according to U.S. and Iraqi officials. The Pentagon said the missile defense system at Assad Air Base “was engaged in the defense of our forces,” adding, “We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those who died.”

President Biden on Friday extended the national emergency regarding Iran for another year, according to a White House notice. The national emergency was first proposed by President Clinton on March 15, 1995, in Executive Order 12957.

In a letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate President Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Biden said, “The actions and policies of the Iranian government continue to pose an extraordinary and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.”

Biden wrote: “For these reasons, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency regarding Iran declared in Executive Order 12957 and to maintain comprehensive sanctions against Iran to address this threat.”
