The Wuxi authorities in Jiangsu Province have intensified their crackdown on the rights of petitioners, and have also arrested them across the province, igniting their anger as the Chinese Communist Party‘s two national conferences are about to be held.
On March 1, 30 police officers were sent to the Home of the sister of petitioner Zhou Zhufeng at the Yangtii Police Station of the Xishan Branch of the Wuxi Public Security Bureau, and notified the Yinglongqiao Police Station of the Liangxi Branch of the Wuxi Public Security Bureau to take Zhou Zhufeng away. On March 2, the Liangxi Public Security Bureau issued a decision on Zhou Zhubeng’s residence under surveillance on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”.

Prior to this, the authorities had also arrested people across the provinces in order to maintain stability before the two sessions.
On the afternoon of January 27, police from the Yinglongqiao Police Station of the Wuxi Public Security Bureau’s Liangxi Branch and Zhangjing Police Station of the Xishan Branch went to Mingguang City in Anhui Province to arrest Jiang Longmei and Shen Xiaoling, who were on a tour of the city.
Shen Xiaoling arrived in Wuxi at about 1:00 a.m. on January 28 and was escorted to her place of residence. Jiang Longmei was detained at Yinglongqiao police station, and although her Family contacted the police several times to inform them of her whereabouts, they only replied, “I’ll tell you later. Jiang Longmei has not been heard from so far.
In response, Jiang Longmei’s family said to reporters in anger: “Where is the law in this country? The central government talks about the rule of law every day, the corrupt officials in Wuxi are breaking the law every day, and now the petitioners are also breaking the law by traveling, which is unacceptable. Besides, no matter what law she broke, the law clearly stipulates that the summons shall not exceed 24 hours, but now it has been more than three days, we went to the police station, also made a lot of phone calls, and now the police station does not give a statement? Is Jiang Longmei illegally detained? If detained, should also inform the family in accordance with the law, now that is not released, nor received a notice of detention, indicating that the public security in the illegal detention of Jiang Longmei. As a result of the collective signing of the “Report on the Communist Party of Wuxi’s “two sessions” of stability maintenance by means of black and evil” in February this year and the mailing of the report to various departments, the Wuxi visitors have now reported that the public security authorities in all districts of Wuxi are now looking for and investigating the signed visitors. The public security officials will ask, “Did you sign this yourself? Why did you sign it? Where did you sign this? Who asked you to sign? Who wrote this material?” And so on.
In response, the visitors believe that this is Secretary Huang Qin’s attempt to crack down and retaliate against the whistleblower.
