In an interview with Reuters on March 2, Jiang Qichen said that the KMT and Beijing currently maintain daily contact, but there is no high-level communication. He is not in a hurry to visit Beijing to meet with Xi Jinping.
“We can wait for a better Time and need not insist. It’s not about meeting for the sake of meeting, it’s about having meaning and respect.” Jiang Qichen said, “The timing has to be right, but more importantly, it has to be on the premise of equality and dignity, and it has to be good for Taiwan.”
Jiang Qichen believes that the Chinese Communist Party is the main threat facing Taiwan, and that the “one country, two systems” proposed by the Chinese Communist Party has no market in Taiwan, where people like freedom and where the turmoil in Hong Kong has inspired the Taiwanese.
We are used to this way of Life,” he said. If you want the people of Taiwan to change it, it’s impossible.”
After the KMT’s crushing defeat in last year’s presidential election in Taiwan, which led to the resignation of party chairman Wu Dunyi, KMT legislator Jiang Qichen was elected party chairman.
On October 6, 2020, the Taiwan Legislative Yuan passed without objection two resolutions proposed by the KMT’s Legislative Yuan caucus: “Resumption of diplomatic relations between the United States and Taiwan” and “The government should request the United States to assist Taiwan in resisting the Chinese Communist Party.” The resolutions were passed without objection. The KMT, which has always held a pro-Communist position, made a rare voice to “resist the Chinese Communist Party,” which aroused widespread concern among public opinion.
In September last year, when tensions were high in the Taiwan Strait, the KMT proposed to send Wang Jinping to the Straits Forum, and the Chinese Communist Party’s CCTV host claimed that he had come to “seek peace,” triggering a strong backlash from the Taiwan dynasty and the wild. For the first time, the KMT cancelled its participation in the Straits Forum in the name of a political party.
In July, the KMT will hold elections, and Jiang Qichen faces re-election as party leader. He said he has no intention of running for president, but would rather be a “kingmaker” and find a suitable candidate for the 2024 presidential race to help the KMT return to power.
