Former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at CPAC on Feb. 28, 2021.
Former President Trump’s speech at the 2021 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) received an extremely enthusiastic response from the conservative and Republican audience, but he told Newsmax TV that he has not yet decided whether to run in the 2024 presidential election, and that if he does, he “can’t imagine” anyone else who could win 2024.
The appearance at the CPAC convention on Sunday, Feb. 28, was Trump’s first public appearance since he left the presidency on Jan. 20. After the speech, Trump spoke backstage at the convention with Newsmax TV host Mark Halperin. In an interview with Newsmax host Mark Halperin, Trump said, “I’m not sure anybody can win except us (Republicans). Look, I’ve done a great job for this party. We’ve had the greatest economy ever, and we’ve done another economic rebuild.”
Trump added that his administration has built a very strong economic base, and that the economy rebuilt even after the COVID-19 pandemic is so strong that no other country can compete with the United States. Trump referred to COVID-19 as the “Chinese (Communist) virus.
Trump said, “Based on the job performance, I think we did a great job, and I’m not sure anybody but us (Republicans) is going to win.”
However, Trump said he has not yet decided whether to run in 2024, saying with great reservation, “I love our country and I’m going to do what’s right for our country.”
A poll conducted at the CPAC convention showed that 55 percent of attendees believe Trump should be the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election. Trump said he has “never seen polling numbers like that.”
On the reaction at CPAC, Trump said, “It felt good. The crowd was incredible. I think the enthusiasm is even greater than it was before the (2020) election. We had a remarkable general election accomplishment, more than any presidential candidate you know, in terms of votes. But the crowds here are just incredible. They love this country and just want to see it succeed.”
In addition, Trump said CPAC invited him to speak and he chose to come to CPAC to give a speech rather than leave the opportunity to speak to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell (Mitch McConnell) and the number three Republican in the House of Representatives, Liz Cheney (D-Calif.). Liz Cheney (R-Texas), “because we have to save our country” and save America from what the Biden administration has done.
We have to stop what’s bad for our country,” Trump told Halperin. When you look at the border, when you look at what’s happening against energy independence, when you look at the many different elements of what they (meaning Democrats) are doing, they’re going to destroy our country.”
Of the CPAC convention, Trump had praise for it, saying, “They did a great job here. I thought early on that this would be a great place to get my point across – everybody wanted to hear it, and the crowd outside (the venue) (was) incredible. This whole place is vibrant and full of energy. They love our country.”
