AZ vaccine works well Germany changes its mind: approved for vaccination over 65 years old

After the UK published the results of a large study covering 7.5 million people, showing that the Oxford AZ vaccine is more effective than the Pfizer & BNT vaccine in reducing the risk of serious illness in the elderly, the German Vaccine Commission admitted that its previous decision not to allow people over 65 to receive the AZ vaccine was wrong, and on the 4th followed in the footsteps of France and Belgium, officially announced the opening of the AZ vaccine for German citizens over 65 years old!

German health Minister Jens Spahn said, “The Vaccine Commission now recommends the AZ vaccine for people over the age of 65, which is good news for the elderly who are waiting to receive the vaccine.”

The AZ vaccine has been repeatedly rumored internationally to have poor protection for people over 65 years of age, so many countries have banned the AZ vaccine for people over 65 years of age. Germany previously did not open the AZ vaccine for people over 65 years of age due to a lack of relevant trial data, but has changed its position after more safety data became available.

Spahn pointed out that the new experimental data shows that the AZ vaccine provides even better protection if the second dose is administered 12 weeks apart. He said that Germany will soon cooperate with the Vaccine Commission’s recommendations to amend existing vaccine regulations.

The latest study of 7.5 million local elders over 70 years of age assessed the protection of those with symptoms four weeks after a dose of the vaccine. Even the AZ vaccine provided better protection at a later stage.

In addition, the study found that as long as there was one dose of the AZ or BNT vaccine, it prevented 80% of hospitalizations in people over 80 years of age with a confirmed diagnosis.
