The New Zealand government intends to follow Australia’s lead and today called on Google and Facebook to reach an agreement with New Zealand media to pay for the use of news content.
New Zealand Communications Minister Kris Faafoi said he is considering implementing the same type of regulation for the struggling New Zealand media industry, but hopes the agreement can be negotiated.
Speaking before a parliamentary committee, Faafoi said, “I met with Google and Facebook (representatives) last week.”
He said, “I’m confident that commercial negotiations between traditional media and digital platforms will also take place in New Zealand, and I’m quite encouraged.”
Australia’s parliament passed legislation last week that would require technology giants to pay for the publication of news content produced by Australian media. Facebook and Google reached an agreement with Australia, agreeing to pay Australian news organizations to avoid being subject to harsh mandatory bargaining rules.
