Taiwan : National Security Law has become a tool for suppressing dissidents, accelerating the rejection of the Communist Party of China and a pessimistic outlook for Hong Kong

Supporters of the pro-democracy movement line up outside the West Kowloon Magistracy in Hong Kong for a hearing on March 1, 2021

Concerned about the 47 pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong charged with conspiracy to subvert state power, various sectors in Taiwan have expressed concern that the national security law has become a tool to suppress dissidents and are pessimistic about the future development of Hong Kong. Taiwan’s Causeway Bay bookstore director Lin Rongji worries that China is using legal action to send Lai Chi-ying and others to China, and calls on the international community to put pressure on Beijing. The Mainland Affairs Council is deeply saddened by the serious infringement of democracy and human rights in Hong Kong, and believes that it will accelerate the accumulation of rejection and hostility towards the Chinese Communist Party.

The Deputy Director General of the Mainland Affairs Council, Mr. Qiu Chuizheng, expressed his deep concern over the prosecution of Hong Kong democrats for subversion of state power for their participation in the Legislative Council primary election, and his deep sorrow over the scarred democracy and human rights in Hong Kong.

Qiu Chui-zheng said, “There are precedents for the pro-democracy camp to participate in the Legislative Council primaries in Hong Kong in the past. Whether in the past or at present, the starting point of the democrats is, in the final analysis, only the original intention of loving Hong Kong. It was possible to do so in the past, but now it is interpreted as subversion of the regime, which I believe all sectors can hardly accept. We solemnly appeal to the Chinese Communist Party that brutal suppression will only trigger more confrontation and hostility, which will not help the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, and that only by returning the right to democracy and freedom to the people of Hong Kong can Hong Kong enjoy long-lasting stability.

The statement of the Land Commission said that the world and the people of Taiwan are watching what the Chinese Communist Party has done to the pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, including the unfounded accusations and whether the subsequent “sending to China” treatment. The repeated crackdowns will not help Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, but will also accelerate the accumulation of rejection and hostility towards the CCP.

The Land Commission calls on the Chinese Communist Party to stop hurting Hong Kong and return the democratic and free rights to the people of Hong Kong, which is the fundamental way to let Hong Kong enjoy long-term stability.

Taiwan’s Causeway Bay bookstore manager Lin Rongji said in an interview with this station, 47 pro-democracy activists suddenly early court session, the purpose is only to use the name of the law to put them in custody, and he is worried about including Lai Chi-ying and others, the next step may be sent to China.

Lin Rongji said: especially fat Lai (Lai Chi-ying) may be sent to the mainland in the future, he is more dangerous, which is no good signs. And today also reflects that Hong Kong people have not given up, so many people lined up to hear the trial, which is actually a disguised protest, the police can do nothing, because Hong Kong people are very good at exploiting loopholes, take this opportunity to come out to express our resistance, which is the smart place of Hong Kong people. We have a few more space can be expressed on the exhaustion of a few space, now the situation is very bad. The future of course depends on how the May 31 judge will rule, but I do not see a good result.

Lam Wing-ki believes that whether Lai Chi-ying and Tai Yiu-ting will be sent to China depends partly on whether the reaction of the West is strong enough.

Lin Rongji said: Western countries have a reaction, see some consulates in Hong Kong are out, the United States also put forward a statement, asking them to release the prosecuted protesters, I guess he will see how the outside reaction is determined again, he should be watching the reaction of Western countries, but you say the prospect of words, I do not see optimistic.

National Party Chairman Jiang Qichen said on Monday (1) attended a religious event in response to media questions, has always supported democracy and the rule of law in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong National Security Law has become a tool to combat dissidents, quite regrettable and quite disappointing.

Jiang Qichen said: this a certain degree, in fact, also impacted not only the people of Hong Kong, but all walks of Life on the expectations of democracy, but also will hit the confidence of Hong Kong people to the Chinese Communist Party governance. So no matter what, we still hope that the democratic rule of law in Hong Kong should be maintained. The fact that something like this happened, we think, will actually be quite disappointing for the future development of Hong Kong, and will even affect the future development of Hong Kong.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) issued a statement severely rebuking, saying that Hong Kong society has been equivalent to direct rule by the Chinese Communist Party, arbitrarily arresting and detaining dissidents, putting Hong Kong people in danger and the possibility of being arrested at any Time in the red terror. It demanded that the Chinese Communist Party and the Hong Kong government must immediately release all the detained pro-democracy activists and restore Hong Kong’s democratic society to its original state of freedom and rule of law.
