Reuters reported from Beijing on Sunday (November 15) that authorities in Jinan, China, said this weekend that new coronaviruses were found on beef, tripe and their packaging from Brazil, Bolivia and New Zealand. In addition, two other provincial capitals have also found coronaviruses on packages of pork imported from Argentina.
Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the risk of neo-coronavirus infection from frozen foods is low, China is stepping up testing of frozen foods after the virus was repeatedly detected in imported products, leading to a further import ban.
Cases of the virus in frozen pork have also been reported in Zhengzhou, Henan Province and Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China. It is unclear if the two cases are related.
Authorities said the sample that tested positive in Zhengzhou came from 24 tons of frozen pork from a warehouse in Qingdao, Shandong province.
Coronavirus was also found in China last week on packages of Argentine beef in Shandong and Jiangsu, and Brazilian beef in Wuhan. China is the world’s largest importer of beef.
Separately, the city of Baotou in China’s Inner Mongolia region said it had sterilized certain products and vehicles of a company after an asymptomatic case in Tianjin came into contact with a shipment of French frozen pork.
It is unclear whether authorities have any idea of the direction and route of infection between the case and the meat. Authorities indicated that 115 people tested negative for nucleic acids.
