Pentagon: U.S. Airstrikes on Pro-Iranian Militia Facilities in Syria

The U.S. Department of Defense said U.S. forces launched airstrikes today in eastern Syria against facilities owned by Iranian-backed militias, reportedly in retaliation for recent rocket attacks on U.S. military positions in Iraq.

“At the direction of President Joe Biden, U.S. military forces launched airstrikes earlier tonight in eastern Syria against facilities used by Iranian-backed militant groups,” Defense Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

He said, “These airstrikes were launched with authorization in response to recent attacks against U.S. and coalition personnel in Iraq, and the ongoing threat to those personnel.”
