The Democrat-promoted Equality Act has been hotly debated in Congress recently, with some conservative lawmakers questioning the bill as an infringement on women’s rights and religious freedom. Two dissident congresswomen even engaged in a “hallway war” in front of their offices to express their stance on the bill.
The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives is pushing H.R. 5, the Equality Act, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual identity, sexual orientation and other grounds. President Joe Biden had promised during his campaign to pass the bill within his first 100 days in office. However, some conservative lawmakers oppose the bill.
Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene argues that the so-called “equality” bill undermines women’s rights by forcing girls to compete with biological boys (who self-identify as boys) in school sports. It would force girls to compete in school sports with fellow students who are biologically male (but self-identify as female) and trample on the freedom of religion.
On Wednesday evening (24), Green hung a sign on the outside wall of her office that read “There are two genders: male and female” and “Believe in science” and live-tweeted the process.
In another tweet, Greene emphasized that “God only created two genders.
Green’s action came hours after Illinois Democratic Rep. Marie Newman put up a rainbow flag symbolizing transgender people on the outside wall of her office and slammed Green in a tweet for “discriminating against transgender Americans.
At a press conference Thursday morning, Greene said the so-called Equality Act is subverting America’s founding principles, social norms and violating the basic rights of its citizens.
On Thursday, the House Freedom Caucus came out against the so-called “Equality” bill, she wrote in a tweet. The bill is a direct attack on women’s rights, women’s athletics and religious freedom.
Green reiterated, “We need to do the right thing and defend freedom, not legislate based on ‘feelings’.”
In a later tweet, Greene noted that the so-called “equality” bill “is not about stopping discrimination, it’s about creating discrimination against women and religious freedom.
“I move to adjourn today to give the 117th Congress more Time to consider this immoral bill.” Green said.
