Manhattan district attorney gets Trump’s tax returns

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance has obtained Trump‘s long-term tax returns on Thursday (Feb. 25) after the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday (22) allowed a New York grand jury to obtain former President Trump’s (Trump’s) tax information.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance (Cy Vance) has obtained Trump’s long-term tax returns on Thursday (Feb. 25) after the U.S. Supreme Court allowed a New York grand jury to obtain former President Trump’s (Trump) tax information on Monday (22).

Danny Frost, a spokesman for Vance’s office, confirmed the news to the media on Thursday. Mazars USA, the accounting firm representing Trump on his tax returns, responded to the subpoena request.

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued only a one-sentence unsigned decision in the case, denying Trump’s request to allow a New York grand jury access to Trump’s tax return information and not releasing the specific chancery vote.

Vance issued a grand jury subpoena in August 2019 to Trump personally and the Masals accounting firm his company hired to produce Trump’s and his company’s tax documents and other financial records from January 2011 through 8 2019. The records are related to Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney.

Vance’s office said they are launching a criminal investigation into Trump and his business group for alleged financial, insurance and bank fraud, and that the materials are part of a criminal investigation.

Trump and his legal team declined to provide the materials, citing presidential immunity, but the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s request for “absolute immunity” in 2020. Last July, Chief Justice John Roberts issued an opinion on the 7-2 ruling, which rejected Trump’s claim that he was immune from state investigations while in office.

Roberts said at the Time that “in our judicial system, ‘the public has a right to have access to the physical evidence of every person.’ Since the founding of the Republic, ‘everyone’ includes the president of the United States.”

Lawyers representing Trump continue to fight the subpoena and allege that Vance’s office made the move in bad faith and is asking too much.

The fact that Vance has Trump’s documents on taxes and other finances does not mean they will be seen by the public and are unlikely to be released to the public in the future. The grand jury convened by Vance’s office asked for the tax records in its investigation.

On Monday, Trump issued a statement through his former president’s office criticizing the Supreme Court’s decision and saying it was part of a “witch hunt” against him. The statement said the Supreme Court should not have allowed this “fishing expedition” to happen, something that has never happened to a president before – allowing a political witch hunt to continue, using legal means to “politically persecute” a former president. “.

For more than two years, New York City has been investigating every business I’ve ever done, including asking the largest and most reputable law firms and accounting firms in the United States for the tax forms they did for me,” he said. The Tea Party has all been treated much better by the IRS than Trump has by me.”

“This is something that has never happened to a president before, and it’s all a Democrat investigation in a territory that is entirely Democratic – New York City and New York State – and entirely controlled and led by Governor Andrew Cuomo, who, it has been widely reported is my enemy.” Trump said.

Marsalis & Associates has said they are not contesting the subpoena and will comply with their legal obligations.
