Biden’s sole power to use nuclear weapons, House Democrats urge abandonment
Dozens of House Democrats have signed a letter calling on President Joe Biden to relinquish his exclusive authority to launch nuclear weapons and “consider changing” command and control of U.S. nuclear forces.
In a letter, Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-California, said, “Granting this authority to one person creates a real risk. Previous presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or have exhibited behavior that has caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.”
The letter says, “While any president may confer with advisers before ordering a nuclear strike, there is no requirement to do so. If the military assesses that the order is lawful under the laws of war, it is obligated to carry out the order. At the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, such an attack would occur within minutes.”

Panetta issued a similar statement Monday. He tweeted that he is calling on the White House to “build checks and balances into our nuclear command and control structure.”
According to his tweet, “Past presidents have threatened nuclear strikes against other countries or exhibited worrisome behavior that calls into question their judgment.”
The letter was signed by Panetta and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), another California Democrat, and Politico reported that about 36 Democrats also signed the letter.
According to the letter, the lawmakers proposed that more officials “agree to the launch order,” including the vice president and the speaker of the House.
They also proposed “requiring the Secretary of Defense to justify the launch order and the Attorney General to certify that it is legal. And it would also require a congressional declaration of war or another specific authorization from Congress.
In January, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she spoke with Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley about protecting the nuclear code from former President Trump’s contacts.
Romney: If Trump runs, he’ll win 2024 Republican nomination
Defying the odds, U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, a Republican who specializes in working against Trump, said Tuesday (Feb. 23) that if Trump runs for president again in 2024, he believes he will be the Republican presidential nominee for a third Time.
In an online discussion Tuesday, Romney said, “I think he’s going to win the nomination, if he runs. I mean, a lot can happen between now and 2024, and I’m not very good at predicting that.”
“I don’t really know what’s going to happen then. But I look at the polls and the polls show that among the names of potential contenders in 2024, if you put President Trump among Republicans, he (would) win by a landslide.”
Romney said that even though Trump has left office from Jan. 20, “he still has by far the loudest voice and a lot of influence in my party.”
Romney said, “I expect that he will continue to play that role. I don’t know if he’s going to run in 2024. But if he does, I’m pretty sure that he will win the nomination.”
Romney, a consistent anti-Trump lawmaker in the Republican Party, is the only Republican lawmaker to have voted guilty in both impeachment trials against Trump. He has said that he would never vote for Trump.
Romney added, “I haven’t voted for him in the past. I’ll probably support someone who I think, better represents my niche faction of the Republican Party.”
Romney’s rare statement Tuesday drew the attention of Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller, who commented on Twitter, “Even Romney gets this.”
In three media interviews last week, Trump declined to say whether he would run for president again, saying it was “too early.
Fox News senior correspondent John Roberts tweeted Wednesday that sources said Trump would not announce a 2024 run during a speech at the Conservative Congress (CPAC) this Sunday, but that he would be “enthusiastic” about the idea – and could go that route directly. -He may also go that route directly; Trump will criticize current President Joe Biden’s policies to date in his speech Sunday afternoon.
U.S. lawmakers: Pence praises Trump during meeting with Republicans
Former Vice President Mike Pence praised former President Trump during a meeting with congressional Republicans this week, Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Banks told left-leaning media outlet CNN on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
Banks said members of his Congressional Republican Study Committee and Pence, who met in a Washington-area transition office to discuss the Republican Party’s way forward and also to talk about the party’s past accomplishments, praised Trump during the meeting.
“He appreciated his relationship with President Trump,” Banks said, “and I got the sense that they talked a lot and maintained the same friendship and personal relationship over a four-year period.”
Pence chief of staff Marc Short told Fox News, “The president thanked the vice president for his service and told him he was doing a great job, and they’ve had conversations since then, even including this week.”
Short added that Trump and Pence have accomplished a lot together and “they should be proud of that.”
