A Gulfstream G550 aircraft parked at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport had its right wing pierced by a “foreign object” on April 25, 2020. After a 10-month investigation, the foreign object that hit the plane came from a subway construction area outside the airport, and the estimated cost of repairing the plane is about 186 million yuan (about $28.8 million), or 60 percent of the price of a new plane.
The top business jet, G550/B-8275, was hosted by Beijing-based Hanyu Airlines and docked at Shuangliu Airport after running a Hangzhou-Chengdu flight, Punch News reported.
At 9:28 p.m. on April 26 last year, Shuangliu Airport cleaning staff found screws and other parts under the aircraft, and the ramp supervisor B-8275 aircraft had damage to the right wing. Hanyu airline mechanic inspection found that the middle of the right wing of the aircraft was pierced, and there was a piece of metal residue inside the wing damage port.
Because the incident involved units outside of civil aviation, the Sichuan Regulatory Bureau coordinated with the Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department Airport Public Security Bureau to participate in the investigation. After more than a month of visits, investigation and analysis, and finally confirmed that the metal object from the 508 aircraft position south of the airport perimeter outside the construction area, the site involved in the Chengdu rail transit line 19 phase II project civil construction 3 work area.
The investigation report said that at 3:37 a.m. on April 25, 2020, the construction area of a gantry crane for construction operations malfunctioned and generated an explosion, resulting in its main lifting mechanism brake wheel shattered, the broken pieces flew out and hit the right wing of the aircraft.
The report pointed out that the repair cost of the B-8275 aircraft is estimated at $28.8 million, more than 60% of the price of a new aircraft ($45 million). The B-8275 aircraft is no longer under the custody of Hanwoo Airlines, and the owner of the aircraft, International Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Trading Company, is still waiting for compensation from the relevant authorities.
