Burken Announces U.S. Return to UN Human Rights Council, Criticizes China’s Poor Human Rights

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced in a video address on 24 May that the United States will return to the United Nations Human Rights Council, asking for a vote from U.N. member states, three years after the former Trump administration announced its withdrawal from the Commission on Human Rights in 2018, and the first attempt by Washington to return and compete for a seat on the 2022-24 term.

The Human Rights Commission currently has 47 seats, with China, Russia, Venezuela and the Philippines, all of which have poor human rights records, as members. Buerken has lambasted Beijing authorities for their Xinjiang and Hong Kong policies, which violate human rights.
