Guo Meimei, born in 1991, has been in the public eye since about 2011. At that time, she often showed off her wealth by broadcasting live or posting photos on the online social media platform Weibo as the “general manager of the Red Cross Society of China”, making her a popular online celebrity. She brags about living in a large villa, driving a Maserati and Lamborghini sports car, and owning a dozen Hermes bags and other expensive luxury items with her mother.

While such bragging earned Guo Meimei a lot of public attention, it also raised huge questions about where the money collected by the Red Cross Society of China (the “Red Cross Society”) was going. Despite repeated claims by officials of the Red Cross that Guo has nothing to do with the Red Cross, the trust of the Chinese public in the Red Cross has collapsed. The word “roll” was left by netizens in less than two days.

After a major setback in fundraising, the China Red Society had threatened to relaunch its investigation into Guo Meimei, not expecting Guo to respond immediately and forcefully, saying that anyone who dared to touch a hair on her head would immediately publish the inside story. The Red Society then surprisingly took the initiative to abandon the reopening of the investigation into the “Guo Meimei case”, Guo Meimei did not face any punishment for showing off her wealth.

The case was heard in Beijing‘s Dongcheng District Court on September 11, 2015, where Guo was found guilty of opening a casino and sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of 50,000 yuan. Guo Meimei was thus jailed until she was released from prison on July 13, 2019.

What is the real background of Guo Meimei’s Family? Why is she so “rich” at such a young age? These questions are filled with rumors, some sources say that Guo and her mother are “mistresses” who are “adopted” by rich people, and that she has a number of rich and powerful “godfathers” behind her. “Some sources say that she is a “socialite” who sells her sexuality to make money, and that the price of her sex trade is high. Guo Meimei herself confessed to police in prison that she had engaged in prostitution (i.e., sex trafficking) under the guise of signing up for commercial performances.

On August 3, 2011, renowned Hong Kong economist Lang Xianping conducted an interview with Guo’s mother and daughter in which she claimed that Wang Jun in Shenzhen was her “godfather” and that the luxury car Maserati was a gift from Wang Jun. Soon afterwards, Guo’s mother claimed that Guo was in fact the biological daughter of Wang Jun, the capitalist shareholder of “Zhonghong Boai”. But soon after the message was sent, it was suddenly deleted overnight. It is suspected that the Ministry of Propaganda was the one who ordered the deletion of the post, and it was also the Ministry of Propaganda officials who were able to make Lang Xianping come forward to clear the name of the mother and daughter.
