A number of cities in the US capital, Washington, D.C., are holding marches in support of President Trump to protest against unproven fraud in the US election.
The events in Washington began Saturday with a “Women for Trump” rally and a “Stop the Steal” march, among others. The rallies are being staged by conservative media personalities and white populists, and the far-right Proud Boys group has said some of its members will also participate in the protests. The protesters expressed support for unsubstantiated allegations of fraud in the Nov. 3 U.S. election.
The U.S. National Park Service said Friday it had approved a request by the group Women for America First to hold a 10,000-strong rally at Washington’s Liberty Plaza. Trump supporters are expected to gather at Liberty Plaza on the east side of the White House before beginning the rally and march. Trump opponents also plan to hold counter-demonstrations at Liberty Plaza, Union Station and the federal Supreme Court.
Police have shut down streets near the protest site and law enforcement is on high alert for possible violence, with some Washington stores closed last week for that purpose. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said at a press conference this week that Washington police were prepared.
Before the pro-Trump rally began, President Trump drove in a motorcade along Pennsylvania Avenue, where he smiled and waved to hundreds of people on both sides of the road before heading to play golf at the presidential golf course in Virginia.
In a tweet sent out on Friday, Trump said, “Touching to see all those tremendous outpourings of support, especially the organized rallies that have erupted across the country, including the big event in D.C. on Saturday. I may even try to stop by and say hello.”
Other major U.S. cities are also expected to hold protests in support of Trump on Saturday.
