World’s first human cases of H5N8 avian influenza detected in Russia

Russian government officials said Feb. 20 that seven cases of human infection with H5N8 avian influenza were found in the country and reported to the World health Organization (WHO) a few days ago.

This is the world’s first case of human infection with H5N8, the seven are poultry farm employees, is in good condition. The Russian side said there are no signs of human-to-human transmission.

Sputnik reported that Anna Popova, director of consumer protection and public interest supervision in the Russian Federation, said that researchers at Russia’s “Vector” scientific center found the first laboratory-confirmed case of human infection with H5N8 avian influenza.

According to the report, the researchers isolated the genetic material of H5N8 avian influenza from samples taken from seven employees of a poultry farm in southern Russia, which had an outbreak in December 2020, after which the government quickly took various preventive measures to bring the outbreak under control.

The seven people are currently in good condition with mild clinical symptoms. Popova said there are no signs of human-to-human transmission.
