President Trump will provide an update today (April 13) on “Operation Godspeed,” an effort to speed up the process of developing, manufacturing and distributing vaccines to bring a coronavirus (CTV) vaccine to market as quickly and safely as possible to save lives.
According to the White House, Trump was briefed earlier in the Oval Office by advisers and is scheduled to speak at 4 p.m. in the Rose Garden. This is the first time in over a week that the President has addressed the press from the White House.
President Trump said the vaccine development effort is the largest mobilization for vaccine development in U.S. history, and that in the past, vaccine development typically took more than eight years to effectively vaccinate, but today it is successful in about six months.
Today the Health Department updated that once the vaccine is available, several of the largest pharmacies in the U.S. will administer it to the public for free. Earlier, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (Pfizer) announced that it had developed a vaccine that was more than 90 percent effective and was seeking emergency authorization.
Trump said the good news from Pfizer sent the stock market soaring, up 400 points today. Pfizer says it can deliver 50 million doses of vaccine by the end of the year and 1.3 billion next year.
The vaccine will be distributed first to seniors, people at high risk, and doctors and nurses on the front lines, and next April, it’s expected to be given to the average person in America.
Trump said that while Pfizer is not in Operation Godspeed, the government has allocated billions of dollars. Whether it’s a research and development company in Operation Godspeed or a government grant, they’re getting a lot of help from the government.
In the next few weeks, Trump says they’ll get emergency authorization, and there are R&D companies on the way to apply as well. Once authorized, there has been a request for the general to distribute it within 24 hours, and logistics and the military are all ready to send it to the people who need it most at the first opportunity.

Kawakami also invited other colleagues to speak, detailing the current state of development of several vaccine candidates, and when they will be available. They said that it is gratifying to get such results in six months, that the vaccine is neither the White House nor the drug companies’ decision, and that it will be rigorously tested and reviewed by independent experts, and that the FDA will decide whether to authorize it.
Vice President Pence said he would work with state governors to distribute the vaccine. He cautioned to remain cautious, wash hands frequently, wear masks, maintain social distance, put health first, protect your family, friends and community, and work together through this difficult time.
In response to the New York governor’s rejection of the vaccine, Trump said not to engage in politics while neglecting to save lives.
Referring to the outbreak earlier, the White House said, “Since the outbreak, the administration has taken decisive action and has invited scientists and health care experts from academia and industry to help the administration understand, treat and fight this outbreak.”
