Pregnant women infected with the CCA virus may be more at risk than others, a medical study suggests.
The study, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, looked at 240 pregnant women infected with the virus who were admitted to 35 hospitals in Washington state between March and June 2020; three of them died and 24 were hospitalized. The hospitalization rate was 3.5 times higher than other adults of the same age in the state, and the mortality rate was 13 times higher.
The report’s senior author, Dr. Kristina Adams Waldorf, an obstetrician and gynecologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine, noted that the mortality data alarmed the researchers. Currently, most pregnant women do not fall into the category of people eligible for vaccination.
