Japan finds new variant of virus that may weaken antibodies

A Japanese research team claims to have discovered a new Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) Variant virus that is different from the variant strains found in the UK, South Africa and Brazil. The mutation does not enhance the virus’ ability to infect, but may weaken the function of antibodies.

According to Japanese media reports on the 18th, Tokyo Medical and Dental University lecturer Kanmei Takeuchi announced the confirmation of the discovery of a variant of the virus different from the UK or other countries, the research team collected samples from confirmed patients, and as a result, the new variant of the virus was detected in three confirmed patients at the end of December last year to the middle of last month.

The research team said that the new variant of the virus was found to have a mutation called “E484K” on the surface, and that the “E484K” mutation also occurred in South Africa and Brazil.
