President Joe Biden will direct the executive branch to conduct a comprehensive verification and assessment of U.S. supply chain dependence, including semiconductor chips, high energy storage batteries, medical supplies and rare earths, according to a report by U.S. news television network CNBC on Thursday.
The White House’s plan is to clarify the supply and procurement distance between the U.S. domestic production capacity and the international supply chain, and to identify the countries involved in the supply chain, whether they hold an “unfriendly” or “unstable” position toward the United States.
The CNBC report revealed that while the directive did not name China, it is likely to be part of the Biden Administration‘s efforts to identify the extent of U.S. economic and military dependence on Chinese exports.
A White House spokesman later confirmed to Reuters that one of the priorities of the verification is to ensure that countries in the supply chain do not use their products as a means of countering the United States.
