In favor of impeaching Trump, Toomey strongly condemned by Pennsylvania Republican Party

Pennsylvania Republican U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) has been strongly opposed and condemned by Pennsylvania Republicans in recent days. Toomey voted for both votes in the Senate to decide whether to proceed with an impeachment trial against Trump and, ultimately, whether to convict him. He was the only Pennsylvania Republican in Congress to support a second impeachment of Trump. On February 15, Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Lawrence Tabas informed committee members that they would soon meet to “address and consider the conduct associated with the impeachment vote.

The York County Republican Committee said they condemned Toomey’s actions in the strongest possible terms for his failure to defend the Constitution and the freedoms it guarantees. The Republican Party in many counties, including Cambria, Lancaster, central Pennsylvania, much of the rural northeast, various counties in the northwest region and Northampton County, has issued resolutions condemning Toomey’s actions. Even Republicans in Chester County, where Democrats prevailed in the general election, passed a resolution condemning Toomey. The resolution said, “Senator Toomey has violated the trust of his constituents. And ignored his responsibility to represent the Republican Party and the will of the people who elected him.” Many Republicans believe the trial of the former president is unconstitutional.

Toomey’s voting record in the Senate is about 85 percent in favor of Trump’s policies, according to the website FiveThirtyEight. He also authored much of the tax bill Trump signed, as well as key parts of President Trump’s attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act. But he clashes with Trump on free trade and opposes Trump’s tariff policies in favor of open markets. Some Pennsylvania Republicans say that while Toomey has always come across as conservative, we never really felt he was on board with President Trump’s direction. 2008, Toomey wrote a Wall Street Journal column titled “In Defense of RINO Hunting” that referred to “only in the name of in the name of the Republican Party only”. Now some Pennsylvanians think that’s the label that should be attached to him.
